At the heart of Africa on the equator lies a country whose shape reminds you of a stretched dried hide of a cow. This country that contains thirty six million people is called Kenya. Its beautiful capital city Nairobi, interprets “A place of cool water” in Maasai language, is popularly nick named “The City in the Sun”. Nairobi is a tourist destination of choice all over the world. Apart from Nairobi the capital city, other major cities include Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu with a base in various provinces of the country.

The country’s geographical location gives it strategic significance as a point of entry to other nations in the hinterland like Sudan to the north, Uganda to the west, Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire further in the south west. The nation also borders the Indian Ocean with scenic beaches on the east coast, Somalia in the north east, Lake Victoria and Tanzania to the south.

Kenya offers an interesting terrain. The Great Rift Valley spans across most of the western parts, from north to the south. The country varies in outlook from the harsh desert north to the lash green hilly rift valley and central parts of the country, the sandy coastal plains in the east, up to the golden grassy savannah in the south.

Most mountains were created as a result of volcanic activity. Mount Kenya, the highest centrally located mountain is snow-capped all the year round. Kilimanjaro in the south lies on the Kenya-Tanzania border, while Mount Elgon lies on the Kenya-Uganda border. The long Abardare Range spans the central part of the country from the north to the south. Kenya has eight provinces which include Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza, North Eastern, Eastern and Coast province. The country is endowed with a comfortable sunny climate through most of the year with two cold rainy spells in April-May and July-August.

Kenya has traditionally relied upon agro produce for economic sustenance by growing tea (used for blending poor varieties in many parts of the world), some of the best coffee in the world (Also used for blending), and horticultural produce (Kenyan roses and green leafy vegetables are well known). The country is gradually being targeted as an emerging market and a place where businessmen should find themselves in future.

In the recent past, rich economically viable deposits of minerals have been discovered in the most unexpected locations like Nyanza and Rift Valley (Gold), Western Province (Iron), Eastern and Coast Province (Coal and Gas), and Coast (Titanium).

There are concerted efforts to explore for oil reserves after neighboring Uganda struck oil recently. The road network has greatly improved with assistance from china making most places accessible.
