A LAND OF CONSTRASTS

At the heart of Africa on the equator lies a country whose shape reminds you of a stretched dried hide of a cow. This country that contains thirty six million people is called Kenya. Its beautiful capital city Nairobi, interprets “A place of cool water” in Maasai language, is popularly nick named “The City in the Sun”. Nairobi is a tourist destination of choice all over the world. Apart from Nairobi the capital city, other major cities include Mombasa, Nakuru, Eldoret, and Kisumu with a base in various provinces of the country.

The country’s geographical location gives it strategic significance as a point of entry to other nations in the hinterland like Sudan to the north, Uganda to the west, Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire further in the south west. The nation also borders the Indian Ocean with scenic beaches on the east coast, Somalia in the north east, Lake Victoria and Tanzania to the south.

Kenya offers an interesting terrain. The Great Rift Valley spans across most of the western parts, from north to the south. The country varies in outlook from the harsh desert north to the lash green hilly rift valley and central parts of the country, the sandy coastal plains in the east, up to the golden grassy savannah in the south.

Most mountains were created as a result of volcanic activity. Mount Kenya, the highest centrally located mountain is snow-capped all the year round. Kilimanjaro in the south lies on the Kenya-Tanzania border, while Mount Elgon lies on the Kenya-Uganda border. The long Abardare Range spans the central part of the country from the north to the south. Kenya has eight provinces which include Nairobi, Central, Rift Valley, Western, Nyanza, North Eastern, Eastern and Coast province. The country is endowed with a comfortable sunny climate through most of the year with two cold rainy spells in April-May and July-August.

New Discoveries and Economic Endowment

Kenya has traditionally relied upon agro produce for economic sustenance by growing tea (used for blending poor varieties in many parts of the world), some of the best coffee in the world (Also used for blending), and horticultural produce (Kenyan roses and green leafy vegetables are well known). The country is gradually being targeted as an emerging market and a place where businessmen should find themselves in future.

In the recent past, rich economically viable deposits of minerals have been discovered in the most unexpected locations like Nyanza and Rift Valley (Gold), Western Province (Iron), Eastern and Coast Province (Coal and Gas), and Coast (Titanium).

There are concerted efforts to explore for oil reserves after neighboring Uganda struck oil recently. The road network has greatly improved with assistance from china making most places accessible. About forty percent of Kenyans have access to electricity which is generated from dams and thermal springs. The generation of electric power by wind is just commencing. there are also future prospects for nuclear energy. Currently, only 35 percent of Kenyans have access to electricity.

Where the Sun Always Shines

A lot of solace is to be found in lands where the sun always shines. The warm rays of the sun make merry the heart. No wonder the inhabitants walk with a smile on their faces.  As a multiracial nation, the country is home to people of all creed and colour. The western and central parts of Kenya offer the real indigenous African presence while the south eastern coastal strip makes it hard for you to believe you are not in Saudi Arabia. The country hosts people from all continents alike. This produces a wonderful cultural diversity that makes Kenya stand firm as a non-allied country for the love of humanity. Indigenous Kenyans speak three to four different languages.

Occurrences of Interest

The enchantment in Kenya dawns the realization that you are in a land that breeds the fastest long distance runners in the world. Kenya has become more popular recently for siring the president of United States of America. This might come as a wonder to many, but not to Kenyans themselves, because Kenyans travel far and wide feeling comfortable enough to settle and even contest for and often win civic seats in your own backyard. This has happened in USA, Sweden, Canada, Netherlands and other nations.

This is a country where many yearn to visit. There is this case where a family left Britain for a Kenyan holiday. The wife got so enchanted with what the land had to offer through Maasai warriors that she divorced her husband and simply married the Moran. Another family recently visited from the Nordic countries, fell so much in love with Kenya that she finally refused to go back home, divorced the husband and settled to help the people in Kenya. People visit and want to be buried in this country, when they depart from this world.

This is the only country in the world where some communities go to school at night. With more than forty two tribes to take care of, the country has tried to design a national garment to no avail. A visit to Kenya helps prove how faithful your spouse is. This is not meant to scare couples away from this destination. Your need for genuine love will be satisfied in Kenya.

A recent finding suggests that Kenya is a country where gospel music supercedes secular music in popularity. This is unlike in other countries where the opposite is norm.

Lastly, the country has in the past and at present played host to hundreds of thousands of refugees from neighbouring countries which include Uganda, Rwanda, Zaire, Somalia and Sudan. This explains the many refugee camps in the country. News has it that about 6,000 Somali refugees arrive in the country each day, while Ethiopian's transit to other nations is via Nairobi. Talk of the Canaan of Africa.

An Attractive Tourist Destination

Kenya has a lot to offer with regard to wild life. The country’s animals have uplifted the region's status as a safari destination. Few nations host more animals than Kenya has to offer. There are about 55 parks, national parks and game reserves in the country including the likes of Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Tsavo . Nairobi, the capital city overlooks a national park. The big five ferocious animals (The Elephant, The Lion, The Rhino, The Leopard and The Cape Buffalo) call Kenya home. Many other wonderful creatures can be found in their natural habitat. . Other creatures’ migratory patterns have formed points of attraction to those willing to tour a country whose inhabitants provide a hospitable environment. It is a very popular and romantic tourist destination where members of the Royal British family have found peace and tranquility, enough to exchange marriage proposals far away from home. Prince William actually proposed to Catherine Middleton at the Rotundu log cabin in Kenya. That is magical Kenya, the enchanting land of contrasts and beauty. Many a tourist depart with the words “Hakuna Matata” on their lips, implying “There are no problems here”. This is indeed a notable tourist destination of choice for those with an adventurous spirit.
