I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these

Updated on May 8, 2013

Introduction

Etiquette demands that we speak, behave and dress in a manner that portrays a positive image in society. How often do we walk down the street only to meet men and women of high esteem clad in clothes you would carefully walk around and away from? Some of these people could be your close friends, neighbors, workmates, spouses and even your own children.

We often lack the courage to advice such people for fear of losing their affection. I have at times wished a hidden voice could whisper the following into their ears. I hope some will take the following dressing tips seriously.

Wet clothes

Have you ever wondered why an individual would walk around dressed in wet or partly dry clothes? Is this intended to dry clothes using one’s body temperature or is there a scarcity of good clothes in your wardrobe to the point that you couldn’t wait for that particular attire to dry up prior to donning it?

The worst tendency is dressing in wet underwear while covering them with dry outer garments. It only ensures you walk around steaming wherever you go. People can sniff your wet steamy clothes a mile away. It is also possible to tell the kind of soap you used to clean the underwear, apart from how well they were washed. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these.

Jeans and shorts

We like putting our best foot forward especially when invited to an interview for a much sought after job. You definitely wouldn’t like being disqualified before airing your virtues in front of a panel of respectable ladies and gentlemen. It is advisable to dress and look the part you are aspiring for. Are you making a casual or official appearance?

Your first impression matters a lot. Know the occasion well before you sample your wardrobe’s contents. Jeans and shorts should not appear anywhere near that panel of interviewers. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these.

Revealing attire

Clothes can make or break up an otherwise good occasion. They can also endear a person to other acquaintances. Friendship can be triggered through one’s outfit. The more pleasant one’s clothes are, the better the effect and impression one creates about oneself and also on other people. We should try to dress up to please ourselves, and not other people. But care needs to be exercised in dressing lest we cause offense.

Do not be caught by your prospective father or mother-in-law wearing attire that reveals cleavage. Observers will always misconstrue your motives even where your fiancé has no objection. Torn socks suggest you are worn out in many aspects of life. They will not add to your positive image.

Make-up

Ladies are advised to be light on make-up. Loud tones are better left for wild parties or Halloween festivities. There is make-up for office work. There is make-up for social occasions.

Subtle make-up tones work well during romantic and public occasions. Avoid too much make-up when attending church or interviews. You don’t want to hear what people have to say about your over-done looks. Some make-up reminds me of the owl.

Pumps, high heels and stilettos

We often feel elated and admired when people ogle at us as they yearn for, or “like” our attire through their looks. Are we trying too much to attract a stare here and there? You will meet an occasional lady wearing pumps or high heels for that rare promotional fund-raising run.

No matter how authentic we would like to appear, this won’t do us any good. We might even end up appearing quite clumsy during and at the end of the day. It could even be a recipe for disaster in a physical sense, in our attempt to impress.

Tight skirts and trousers

The wearer of tight cloths might imagine they look pleasant in their attire. They forget how revealing such clothes are to observers. We see overly tight clothes that even show the cellulite beneath.

Tight clothes only make the wearer look gaudy. Moreover, some sights are better left for the bedroom or candle-lit dinner table or better still, his or her eyes only and not for public consumption. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these.

Torn clothes

Now, you don’t want everybody extending a helping hand when you don’t need one. That is what torn clothes do to your personality. They make you look needy. Never don torn garments unless you are acting in a movie or on stage playing the destitute or the clown. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these.

See-through outfits

See-through outfits are designed to enable other people to see right through your attire. Very few public clothes are made with this in mind. Most clothes in this category fall under bedroom or evening garments. Don’t be caught by your father, mother, friends, in-laws, acquaintances and workmates donning see-through attire unless you slog off at a cabaret for your daily bread. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing these.

Too much bling

Too much of something is more often too bad for your image. There are those who are tied to accessories that ought to enhance one’s outlook. They will go to an extent of acquiring cheap gold-plated accessories to appear classy. They ought to know that, though boys and girls have swag, ladies and gentlemen have class.

Too much bling makes you look cheap. Seek for good quality accessories that enhance your outfit. Try not to fake that look.

Conclusion

Clothes can make you appear neat, respectable, responsible, attractive, sexy, tacky, criminal, clown, too old or too young for your own good. Your attire often describes your character in a physical sense. Ensure to dress the part when you stand in front of your wardrobe today.
